Saturated Fat Is Wrongfully Accused

Let us not blame only saturated fats and Trans fats for compromising your health by weight gain and clotting in the arteries. If you stop eating all fats, but continue to binge on junk foods made from refined wheat flour, cheese and sugar, like beads, pizzas, burgers, biscuits, cakes, pasteries, and mithai, then you still run the risk of developing dreadful diseases. The reason is that all these products increase your blood sugar and thereby your insulin, leading to an increase of fat storage in your body.

The idea of avoiding all fats because they make you fat or clog your arteries is a nutritional myth. Everybody needs some amount of fat to stay healthy, lose weight and feel good. In addition to providing energy, there are some essential fats that function in our bodies as components for nerve cells in the brain and heart, and are important for transporting vitamins, minerals and hormones to each cell in the body. There are, of course, good fats and bad fats that you should know about. Tran’s fats and hydrogenated fats are bad for your health, heart and weight. So are highly refined oils. Eating commercially made French fries is probably the worst food to feed yourself or your children. Then there are essential fatty acids (ESAs), found in vegetables, nuts, seeds, and plants that are required for your health and can actually turn your body into a fat-burning machine. These fats are found in cooking oils used in Indian cooking. The sad part is that people today are moving towards oils used more commonly in western countries and imported oils. Coconut oil and ghee have been pushed aside over the last few years, because it was claimed that they cause heart problems and obesity.

Olive oil is great for health but does not suit Indian cooking. In fact, it can do more damage to your health if it is heated to high temperatures while cooking Indian food. Indians also force themselves to consume fish oil supplements, thinking that it is the only good source of omega-3 fatty acids. However, it is interesting to note that high-quality omega-3 fatty acids are found in the following-

  • Flaxseeds or flaxseeds oil.
  • Pumpkin seeds.
  • Wheat germ.
  • Green leafy vegetables.
  • Mustard oil.

What you read next should hopefully convince you to actually include coconut oil and ghee in your diet. Traditional Indian cuisine extensively made use of these two good foods, and ayurveda even prescribed these fats to heal and prevent disease.
